The mantra works like a tuning fork, using sound to create a physical sensation that vibrates in your body and mind. The practice of mantra meditation, which is also called Japa Yoga, will ultimately quiet the thoughts that dominate your mind, so you can experience your full potential and realize your true nature.
Sound Therapy, as Alternative Medicine
Sound is vibration that touches every part of our physical being. Sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell, every molecule in our bodies. Sound enters the healing equation from several directions: it may alter cellular functions through energetic effects; it may entrain biological systems to function more homeostatically; it may calm the mind and therefore the body; or it may have emotional effects, which influence neurotransmitters and neuropeptides, which in turn help to regulate the immune system – the healer within.
Sound and Vibration is Energy. We are Energy Beings.
All matter consists of atomic material which is in constant motion. Motion is manifested in everything within the Universe – everything moves, vibrates.
This motion generates frequencies, which then generate sound. Whether we hear it, everything has a sound, a vibration all its own.
Virtually everything on Earth vibrates. The planet itself vibrates.
Our bodies are over 60% water, which is an excellent medium for sound vibrations to travel. Sound waves travel 15 times faster through water than air. Blood is 92% water, the brain and muscles are 75% water, and bones are about 22% water, In addition, our bones act like resonating chambers for sound vibrations. Every cell in our body is already vibrating.
The Cosmic Language on a Cellular Level with Kirtan & the Harmonium
Kirtan, the practice of chanting mantras, is perhaps the most important technique in bhakti yoga. Although the practice itself is simple, the internal process that it stimulates is vast and mysterious. Externally, we’re just singing repetitive songs with simple melodies and a few Sanskrit words. We try to put our analytical minds to the side and sing from the heart. We try to channel whatever emotion we’re feeling into the song.
Although the kirtan involves music, the underlying art of kirtan chanting is not actually about musical ability or training, it is about the heart. Everyone can participate, regardless of age or cultural background. The purpose of this music is to get us out of our heads and into our hearts. we really don’t have to think much about the words.
Cleveland University researchers discovered that when a mantra is chanted rhythmically it helps produce and spread curative chemicals in the brain, even when the meaning of the mantra is not known.
“I found there was a change in the physiology of my brain. I went from being quite organized and left-brain logical thinking to a very right-brained person, which is your creative side and the key to your connectedness in the world.” – Ron Ragel
Traditionally, kirtans are performed in Sanskrit rather than English, and is an important aspect of their ability to heal. “When you listen to a foreign language, it goes into the right brain,” Ragel says. “That is part of the difference; it’s not being analyzed, the person is just feeling it.”
“I am a singer, and have been all my life. From singing jazz, pop, country, but I never thought I’d be singing mantras.
In fact, this is not singing, like singing perfectly crafted notes and perfect breathing techniques with vibrato etc…. this is freedom from all that.
I had to take everything I had learnt from my voice practice and music and throw it out the window….it doesn’t work here….no place for the ego.
There is no place for the “performance factor”, this is pure divine connection.” – Lea Longo
“When we sing in kirtan, when we sing the mantras, it purifies and cleans the heart of the dust accumulating” – Baynie
“There was something really freeing in the music,” says Lulu Hogg. “I was pain-free and I actually realized, I don’t need any drugs. I can do it on my own.”
“I was just so freed; my whole body was tingling from head to toe, my heart was expanded, my voice was free–all I could do was sit in this state of oneness and freedom. It was the moment I knew this was one of the paths I wanted to take. How such a simple thing can have such a profound transformation.” – Kevin James
